Chocolate wafers are among the most popular snacks in Bulgaria. They are sweet, chocolate filled (and often covered), and sometimes they can even have nuts and fruits in them. I know that this isn’t a food that you can cook or make yourself, but I recently brought my friends Bulgarian snacks, and these were for sure a hit. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t love chocolate? That’s why for this week’s blog, I decided to include a snack.
A chocolate wafer, called vafla in Bulgarian, can be, and often is, eaten as a quick and on-the-go breakfast or can also be a dessert and a midday snack (maybe even all three). Because they are one of the most popular snacks, you can buy them just about anywhere. You can even find them in Bulgarian, Greek, and Russian stores in the U.S.
As mentioned before, there are many different kinds of vafli in Bulgaria, so here are a few different kinds:

This is the most basic of chocolate wafers. The regular “Borovets” wafers are not covered in chocolate, but they do have it in between the wafer layers. These are often sold in large packages, and are very popular at breakfast with plain yogurt.
- Fun fact: The company, Borovets, is named after a very popular ski resort in Bulgaria in the Rila Mountains

This is an example of a chocolate covered chocolate wafer. Not only does the wafer have chocolate on the inside, it is also covered in chocolate. These come individually packaged and are usually bought as a snack.
- Fun fact: The “Mura” wafer is owned by Nestle, a popular company around the world that also owns Butterfingers, Nesquik, and KitKat

Moreni wafer bars usually have peanuts and other nuts like hazelnuts in them. Like Mura bars, Moreni bars are individually packaged and have chocolate both on the inside and outside of the wafer.
Although there are many companies who make chocolate wafers, Borovets, Mura, and Moreni are three of the most popular. Other flavors or variations the companies make are:
- Dark chocolate
- White chocolate
- Orange
- Coconut
- Vanilla
- Coffee
- Caramel
If you happen to stumble upon one of these bars while at the store (I know it’s unlikely, but you never know!), I would highly recommend grabbing one and trying it. They are a great snack, and in my opinion, better than just a chocolate bar.
